Last month, I had a chance to work with one of our kindergarten students for the first time. Ibrahim comes to the community center on a regular basis, but like many of our younger participants, he just wants to play. However, one day he came in and was very excited, because he had received a medal from school for reading 100 books!
Typically, Ibrahim never shows a desire to read, but on this day he asked multiple times if I could read with him. He picked “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” This particular books is very popular with our kindergarten kids. As he began to read, I realized that he is a good reader, but could definitely benefit from more one on one reading time. What made this moment a success was that I got to see the spark in his eyes as we spent time reading together. I hope that spark never goes away.
