Utilizing Best Starts for Kids funding made available through King County, Kent Youth and Family Services is partnering with the Kent School District to prevent homelessness in South King County.
Who Qualifies?
The program is designed to assist unaccompanied minors between the ages of 12 to 24 and families who are at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Possible clients will be screened utilizing the King County Prevention Database. Those who are currently homeless or have received services (such as staying at a shelter) in the last 90 days do not qualify. However, many other programs are available and a current database of resources is ready for consultation. Those who wish to receive services my consent to a King County Prevention screening unless they are fleeing or receiving services for a domestic violence situation, identify as having HIV or AIDS, or are non-consenting minors. Ideally, those who are facing homelessness for the first time will receive services and referrals which will ensure they stay housed permanently.
What services and/or resources are available?
This is a progressive cast management position. Qualifying clients will receive the help they need and will be instrumental in determining exactly what they require in order to remain housed. For example, a client’s car may break down, making it impossible to get to work. If they can’t get to work, then they can’t pay rent. Since they now face an imminent risk of being homeless, they may receive funds for auto repair. As new needs arise, clients will continue to receive the assistance they require. There is a quarterly budget available, but it is limited. Ideally, a client can be linked with existing community resources in order to maintain housing stability. Clients will be met in the community or the KYFS office for an appointment.
