Kent Youth & Family Services is currently accepting applications for a part day teacher position in the Head Start program. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive learning experiences for children that will help them develop in an appropriate manner, based upon age and developmental stage. To enhance the parent’s role as the principal influence on the child’s education and development.
• Work with assistant teachers to prepare and implement lesson plans based upon the children’s needs and interests, including health and nutrition activities, meeting Head Start Program Standards, Work Plan, and Curriculum Goals.
• Interact positively with children to support their individual learning and to meet their emotional needs. Communicate regularly and respectively with families and encourage their involvement in the program.
• Meet with parents on-going (at least two family visits per year) to: partner in educational planning & goal setting; share health, dental, and development information; and to enhance parenting skills.
• Administer developmental assessments, including on-going written observations of individual children for the purpose of identifying needs, setting educational goals, making appropriate referrals, and developing an individual learning plan for each child. Provide a varied curriculum and rich environment including multi-cultural and literacy experiences.
• Coordinate and perform child health and development screenings to evaluate growth, vision, hearing, nutritional status and development. Review immunization status and doctor and dental reports of each child, making referrals as necessary. Utilize this information to develop an individual health summary plan, (IHSP) for each enrolled child.
• Encourage Assistant Teacher, parent, and volunteer participation in all aspects of the program striving to develop teaching skills and enhance leadership abilities through classroom supervision and training.
• Continue to develop knowledge and skills in the area of Early Childhood Education through participation in training.
• Participate as an active team member in interdisciplinary planning for children and families, and other cross-component coordination, evaluation, and training opportunities.
• Provide transition activities for the children and their families assisting in a smooth transition from the Head Start Program to the public school system.
• Maintain complete, accurate records documenting family and child history and contacts, storing them in a confidential manner.
• AA/BA/MA in ECE and at least one year experience in a preschool classroom.
• AA/BA/MA in any field plus 30 quarter credits in child development or ECE focusing on children 3-5 yrs; w/ 6 of the credits in psychology, human development, sociology, family development, child literature, cultural diversity, special education, health, or nutrition and at least one year experience in a preschool classroom. (ECEAP)
• Current Washington State Teaching Certificate with endorsement in ECE or Early Childhood Special Education with experience teaching pre-school age
• AA/BA/MA in any field plus 20 quarter credits in child development or ECE focusing on children 3-5 yrs; w/ 6 of the credits in psychology, human development, sociology, family development, child literature, cultural diversity, special education, health, or nutrition and at least one year experience in a preschool classroom. (HS)
• A Provisional Hire must complete a Professional Development Plan and has 5 years to complete above requirements. Preferred 1 year preschool experience and 15 credits in ECE. Teach for America participants may be considered.
• Proof of physical exam, including TB screening. If positive chest x-ray or MD statement.
• Obtain & keep current, First Aid and CPR card & Food Handler’s permit within 90 days.
• Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprinting background check.
• Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license & proof of insurance coverage.
• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to meet family need including some evenings.
• Must be able to travel to meetings and home visits in personal vehicle or agency vans.
• Must be willing to assist child(ren) during emergencies and daily activities, including lifting & holding them. Lift/move educational materials and equipment. Lifting up to 60#.
• Stand, stoop, kneel, bend, & work with children on the floor for extended periods of time.
• Follow universal precautions when caring for children’s hygiene and emergency needs.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
o Competence in various curriculum arts, science, literacy, math & language development.
o Competence in planning, organizing, scheduling, classroom arrangement and management, staff and parent communications, and record keeping.
o Ability to relate effectively with children, families, community members, and staff of diverse backgrounds.
